Stop of Vi-Care application recommended

Following reports on the significant contamination of the plant strengthener Vi-Care with the active substance DDAC (Didecyldimethylammoniumchlorid), the distributing company MBM Flora & Düngemittel GmbH recommends, as a precaution, to renounce the application of Vi-Care for the time being. Vi-Care is used for strawberries and different vegetable crops in organic and conventional farming. The source of contamination is yet unknown. Together with the producing company Citrex Inc., MBM is currently carrying out further residue analyses in order to identify possible contamination sources within the production process. Results are expected within the next week.

DDAC belongs to the group of quaternary ammonium compounds and is mainly used as a cleaning and disinfecting agent. The active substance DDAC is also subject to the requirements of Regulation (EC) No 396/2005 which sets a maximum residue level of 0,01 mg/kg. An application of Vi-Care may cause residues well above 0,01 mg/kg in the plant, so that harvested products must not be marketed in accordance with food law.
