Interactive world map

The interactive world map on the QS homepage for QS feed monitoring has been extended by the latest analysis results (period 07/2018 - 12/2018). The countries of origin Morocco and Norway are new, so that the map now contains the analysis results of 56 countries. In addition to a detailed overview of the residue situation in the international feed sector, the interactive world map also offers the possibility of comparing the data with the analysis results of the company's own feed.

Revision of the additional control plan for aflatoxin B1 has been revised

With effect from 17 September 2018, the additional control plan Aflatoxin B1 has been revised. Based on existing weather data, on results of the new harvest as well as on gradings made in the past years at the beginning of the harvest, the revision has introduced new risk classifications for several countries of origin concerning the maize harvest.

The new issue of the QS Monitoring Report Feed not only shows the current results on residues in feed but also the development of the results over the last 5 years. In the meantime, the QS scheme can refer to an impressive database of 3.5 million analysis results. With stricter guidance, limit values and the inclusion of new examination parameters, the industry has responded continuously and dynamically to current incidents and findings on undesirable substances in feed. In recent years, the number of individual analyzes has increased, but also the proportion of exceedances has increased slightly. Every year, the evaluations of our monitoring data show that feed companies are doing a good job, says Dr. Hermann-Josef Nienhoff. Managing Director of QS. However, in some places, there is still room for improvement.

Mutual recognition between QS and Fami-QS

QS and FAMI-QS have agreed upon a mutual recognition of audits. The bilateral agreement between the two scheme owners will apply as of 15-08-2018 and include the production and trade of additives premixtures including certain feed materials formerly legally categorized as feed additives. The mutual recognition between QS and FAMI-QS results in a significant advantage for feed companies that are certified against one of the two standards. As of now they have the opportunity to deliver goods into both systems with one audit.

QS Feed Monitoring: Interactive World Map has been updated

The interactive world map on the QS website has been enhanced with the latest QS feed monitoring analysis results and now includes the data for the period from January 1, 2016 to December 31, 2017. Approximately 50,000 samples were collected and analyzed within the QS feed monitoring during these two years. With our interactive world map, the most frequently sampled raw materials from 55 countries of origin and selected parameters can be accessed in aggregated form.

As of 2019, the castration of piglets without anaesthesia in Germany is prohibited by law. In order to counteract the expectable distortion of competition, the QS advisory board for cattle and pigs has already clarified the QS requirements. Thus, from 1 January 2019 the guidelines of the German animal welfare act concerning piglet castration without anaesthesia apply to all QS scheme participants – both from Germany and abroad.

QS Laboratory Performance Assessment: Integration of individual methods evaluated

The laboratory performance assessment carried out in autumn 2016 focused on the test matrix tomato. The spotlight was on active substances, which have never been investigated in previous assessments. By using ethephon (plant growth regulator), fosetyl-aluminium and phosphonic acid (fungicide), for the first time, active substances have been taken into account which have to be analysed by individual methods and are allowed to be subcontracted to other QS approved laboratories.

European neighbouring countries count on QS for fruit, vegetables and potatoes

Between January 2016 and December 2016, more than 270 additional producers of fruit, vegetables and potatoes decided to participate at the QS scheme. 76 percent of the increase is attributable to international businesses (plus 201 companies). With 41 percent, the increase is highest for potatoes producers from abroad. In Spain, the Netherlands and Italy alone, the number of producers eligible to deliver goods into the QS scheme grew by 29 percent.

QS scheme for meat and meat products grows internationally

Compared to January 2016, the number of feed companies eligible to deliver goods into the QS scheme increased from 9,015 to 9,721 – a plus of 8 percent. The number of companies from abroad even grew by 23 percent. This positive trend is particularly noticeable in South-East Europe, including Czech Republic and Hungary. Here, the number of feed companies increased by 84 percent and in Poland, with 211 new companies, it has more than doubled. With 25 percent (363 new companies), the increase is mainly attributable to feed trade, transport and storage.

As a part of the revision 2017, the QS guidelines were editorially and contentually revised as well as further adjusted to common practices and legal requirements. The improvements were developed in committees consisting of experts from science and economy and discussed as well as concluded by the advisory board. The aim is to continuously improve the QS scheme and to make it more practice-oriented.

With the revision on 1 January 2017 the previous Ad-hoc monitoring plan has been included as annex of the Guideline Feed Monitoring and renamed Additional Control Plan for Aflatoxin B1. It therefore is integrated as a permanent tool. Besides the usual sampling in the QS Feed Monitoring, additional analyses must be assigned further on. Amongst others the revised Monitoring plan includes also new risk classifications for the countries of cultivation Canada, Czech Republic, Ukraine and Russia

Feed samples from 80 countries evaluated

The last edition of the QS Monitoring Report Feed comprises the impressive data basis of around 2,5 million analysis results. The basis lies on the 173.000 feed samples of the QS feed monitoring collected during the last eight years. Of them, 24,278 samples were analysed in QS approved laboratories alone in the last 12 months. Having less than one percent of exceedances in the maximum levels confirms the consistent high level achieved in feed security. This is true beyond the borders of Germany and Europe, as 22 percent of the analysed raw materials’ samples were from abroad.

Salmonella round robin test 2015: Majority of QS-approved laboratories with good results

At the latest salmonella round robin test, large part of labs approved by QS achieved positive results. 27 of 30 QS-approved laboratories passed the round robin test Salmonella Monitoring Pig successfully. Three laboratories failed the test and were asked by QS to take appropriate improvement measures and to provide evidence on their implementation. Additionally, in the next salmonella round robin test, they have to participate successfully to maintain their approval.

In total, 410 sanction cases were considered by the sanction board in 2015. 262 cases occurred in the supply chain meat and meat products and 148 cases in the supply chain fruit, vegetables and potatoes. Compared to 2014, the number of sanction cases has been reduced by 21 (5.1 percent). The decrease is mainly in the supply chain meat and meat products (-15 percent).

As part of the nearly 300 random sample audits commissioned by QS, seven foreign businesses have been examined. Five of them are slaughtering or deboning companies.

Consistent quality assurance with fruit and vegetables is bearing fruit: 99 percent of all samples examined for pesticide residues were below the legal maximum limits. This is substantiated by the jointly conducted evaluations of the monitoring programmes of QS Fachgesellschaft Obst-Gemüse-Kartoffeln GmbH (QS) and the German Fruit Trade Association (DFHV). The analysis results are summarised in the Monitoringreport 2015 which will be published in the course of the Fruit Logistica fair.

Revised style guide for the QS certification mark published

The revision of the style guide for the QS mark is completed and the
style guide can be viewed and downloaded from now on at www.q-s.de/qs-style-guide.html.

The rules for the use of the QS certification mark have not been changed with the revision, but emphasis was put on clarity and practical relevance. The now clearly structured style guide includes numerous examples of the use of the certification mark in advertising media, packaging materials or in corporate communications.

New QS-scheme participants: Latest figures at mid-year

The number of our scheme participants grows. In the second quarter of this year another 650 scheme participants chose QS. This is demonstrated by the current analysis. The increase in agricultural businesses is particularly worth highlighting. Another 400 cattle farmers improve the availability of beef from the QS scheme. More than 100 new livestock transport companies, especially from the Netherlands, have been QS-certified.

Regular audits 2013: QS requirements fulfilled to a high degree

The current analysis shows that more than 96 percent of all scheme participants fulfill the QS requirements reliably. This is the result of the evaluation of more than 47,000 audit reports which were conducted by independent auditors within the QS scheme last year. The scheme participants were even able to improve the good results achieved the year before.

The International Committee for Road Transport (ICRT) welcomes a new member. Besides OVOCOM, GMP+ International, Qualimat and QS, GTP (Good Trading Practice) has joined the platform. ICRT´s objective is to harmonize international road transport and to assure a coherent level of quality all over Europe. Therefore, the standards which participate in the ICRT agreed upon common rules that ensure a robust feed safety management system within trading companies.

In 2012, the auditors of the independent certification bodies conducted 30,138 regular audits on QS scheme participants in the meat and meat products supply chain – approximately 520 (1.8%) more than in the previous year. EU changes the specifications for residue analytics of kohlrabi

QAC - scheme participants collect 9,000 test results

QS scheme participants actively participate in a monitoring program for the quaternary ammonium compounds Benzalkonium chloride (BAC) and Didecyldimethylammonium chloride (DDAC). Together with the member companies of the German Fruit Trade Association, they collected a total of 8.897 test results between 5th July 2012 and 31st January 2013 and transmitted them to QS. The results were now forwarded to the German Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL) and the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) in anonymous form.

At this year´s Fruit Logistica QS and the German fruit trade Association (Deutscher Fruchthandelsverband e.V. (DFHV)) present the monitoringreport 2013. For the fourth time now, QS and DFHV have evaluated their residue monitoring programmes together. A total of 16.059 samples originating from 66 countries have been analysed. The results are very pleasing: 40 percent of the samples analysed did not contain any detectable residues of plant protection products. The proportion of samples in which the maximum residue level was exceeded stood at low 0.9 percent for products of European origin. For fruit and vegetables coming from outside Europe, the complaint rate was at 2.8 percent which is 0.4 percentage points lower than the year before.

Scheme participants prove reliability

Companies in the QS scheme work correctly and meet the QS requirements even if they do not expect to be subject of a QS control. That is the result of the random sample audits carried out in 2012. More than 300 unannounced audits were performed at scheme participants between October and November 2012. The results are remarkable: 96.5 percent of the audits were passed.

New QS Standard for Logistics

QS is to offer a standard for the logistics of fresh fruit and vegetables from 1 January 2013. After a transition period of two years, all transports within the supply chain Fruit, Vegetables and Potatoes may only be performed by certified service providers who are registered in the QS database. To allow freight forwarders´ participation in the QS scheme in a realistic manner and avoid double certification, QS recognises the IFS Logistics certificate as equivalent.

The Guideline Antibiotics Programme for pig fattening farms, which will come into force on 01.09.2012, has been published. This means a further step is made regarding the acquisition of antibiotic prescriptions in livestock production. New chairmanship of the sanction board

As of 1 march 2012 Kurt Pillman, former president of the Bonn Regional Court, has taken over the chair of the QS sanction board. He replaces Wilbert Knickenberg, who held this position since 2003, shortly after the foundation of the QS scheme. Additionally Dr. Friedhelm Adam was appointed to the sanction board as further expert for the agricultural sector.

On 8 march 2012 the sanction board will meet for the first time in its new composition. It will be the 36. sanction board meeting since the foundation of the QS scheme.

On 29 February 2012, the 20th German meat congress was held in Bonn. The annual meeting at the Petersberg is a fixed date for members of the meat sector. Accordingly, it is a must-attend for QS. The two-year transitional period regarding the adjustment of veterinary care contracts to the requirements on veterinary stock care which have been in force since January 2010 expired on January 01, 2012. Since then, the content of veterinary care contracts is inspected in the audits.

Spotaudits at poultry producers in the QS scheme

As from 2013 unannounced inspections, so called spotaudits, will be introduced as binding for all livestock producers in the QS scheme. But already this year, QS will take the first step by conducting around 1.200 spotaudits on the initiative of the German poultry sector.
The inspections starting in February will relate to locations in Germany, that participate in the QS scheme in the products scope agriculture – poultry production. Related costs will be borne by the poultry sector.

Antibiotics Monitoring becomes more concrete

Several crucial points could be clarified in the last meetings of the advisory boards poultry and beef, veal and pork, which took place in the margin of the Green Week in Berlin. The guideline for poultry is foreseen to come into effect by 1 March 2012. The monitoring will initially apply to poultry production and will be extended to pig fattening in the summer of this year.

First producer from South Africa in the QS Scheme

From now on chives with QS certification mark can also be delivered from South Africa. The new producer of the QS scheme is located in Randfontein, near Johannesburg. Marolien has a regristation for vegetable production and supplies chives from its 12 hectares of cultivated area.

Spring onions a “hard nut” for labs to crack

Foreign labs are catching up in the latest QS laboratory performance assessment


In autumn 2011, 77 laboratories from twelve countries took part in the laboratory performance assessment for residue monitoring in fruit, vegetables and potatoes. In particular the 28 laboratories undergoing the recognition procedure found themselves faced with a real challenge in the form of the test matrix for spring onions. Only 15 of the 28 labs passed the autumn test. Of the 49 laboratories already recognized on the other hand, none is to lose its recognition.

QS heading into its second decade

Founded at ANUGA in 2001, QS is about to enter its eleventh year. In the ten years that have passed since its inception the QS scheme has become a highly respected mark of approval for quality food products from reliable sources.

QS will celebrate its anniversary at ANUGA with a stand of its own in the meat hall (Hall 6.1, Stand A060/B061). At the stand shared by the Federal Ministry for Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection (BMELV) and the Federation of German Food and Drink Industries (BVE) QS will be represented in an exhibition on quality. Here QS will present quality assurance across all stages based on systematic supply chain inspections for beef and pork. In this exhibition QS will be grouped together with other big names, all of whom stand for various segments of the food market and all of whom promote product quality out of a sense of responsibility.

QS conclusions from EHEC

Advisory Board adopted Supplementary guideline. In their meeting of 20 September 2011, the Fruit, Vegetables and Potatoes advisory board decided among other things that the supplementary guideline Processing was to take effect from 1 January 2012. What it involves in essence is hygiene criteria through which microbiological contamination is to be better avoided in future.

Following the revision of the guideline feed monitoring which came into force on 1 March 2011, the sector now adopted further tightened measures to increase feed safety. The revised guideline feed monitoring will be valid as of 1 July 2011.

International cooperation: Ovocom celebrates 10th anniversary

In 2005 Ovocom Belgium has been the first international partner to conclude a mutual audit recognition with QS. It has been founded at almost the same time as the QS scheme and against the same background: Quality assurance within the supply chain of meat and meat products – here especially for feed – has been placed on a new footing.

Clarification: State of affairs with regard to benchmarking of new GTP code with GMP+ FSA, GMP-Ovocom and QS

Coceral completely revised the GTP code last year. The result is a more widely applicable code for collection, trade, transport and storage of feed materials. It was decided in consultation with a number of scheme holders (Ovocom, QS and GMP+ International) to carry out a joint
benchmarking procedure. The purpose of this is to determine whether the new GTP certificate can be accepted within the scheme of these scheme holders: GMP, QS and GMP+ FSA, respectively.

EHEC: Increased caution with surface water

According to a joint announcement by the Social Ministry and Ministry of the Environment, Agriculture and Consumer Protection of the State of Hessen, the EHEC pathogen O104:H4 has been detected in a stream near Frankfurt called Erlenbach.

EHEC analyses: No contamination found

QS has collected round 3350 results from its scheme participants concerning the analysis of enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) contamination. All results are negative, no contamination was found.

Laboratories in the QS Scheme confirm their abilities

Successful laboratory competence test for the residue monitoring of fruit, vegetables and potatoes.

With additional requirements, 71 laboratories from 13 countries faced up to the latest stress test for authorized laboratories in the QS Scheme this spring.

Slaughtering/Deboning - Audits of special purpose 2011

Whether scheme requirements such as traceability and animal welfare are being correctly complied with, is monitored by independent auditors during the course of regular audits. In addition, QS employees and special auditors will also conduct a range of unannounced audits of special purpose during 2011 . But especially within audits of special pupose weaknesses are being discovered. Among others this will focus on slaughtering and deboning plants.

QS on Twitter

The QS scheme has enriched its communication tools. On May, 4th, 2011 QS sent its first tweet, a short message on Twitter limited to a maximum of 140 characters.

New action levels

Last week the European Commission and the EU member states agreed on stricter action levels for radioactive contamination of foodstuffs and feedingstuffs. This was announced to the press by the German Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection.

The new regulation enters into force on April 13th, 2011. The new action levels take account of several EU regulations and relate to current action levels of iodine, plutonium and caesium. In some cases the values decreased sharply.

QS already informed its scheme participants and pointed out to be on the watch regarding food and feed imports from Japan.
